The Blaxlands Leave a Significant & Transformative Bequest to Canberra Grammar School

Canberra Grammar School is a proud recipient of a transformative bequest from the late Mr Daryl and Mrs Hermina Blaxland, long-time friends of the School and valued members of the CGS community. Their extraordinary endowment of $9.8 million was received by the CGS Foundation with immense gratitude and deep appreciation.

The endowment was invested in the creation of the Daryl and Hermina Blaxland Boarding Scholarship and the Daryl and Hermina Blaxland Indigenous Boarding Scholarship. These scholarships support Indigenous and non-Indigenous students of limited financial means from rural or regional Australia, providing life-changing educational opportunities.

The Blaxland Scholarships offer means-tested boarding and tuition support for up to twelve students at any given time. This unparalleled commitment will ultimately support 10% of the School’s boarding community, benefiting hundreds of rural and Indigenous students for generations to come.

In addition to supporting scholarships, the Blaxland endowment also provides long-term financial underpinning for the redevelopment of the School’s ageing 1960s boarding dormitories, substantially alleviating future financial burdens on the School community.

The generosity of Mr and Mrs Blaxland reflects their deep connection to the School and its values. Their gift ranks among the most significant ever made to an Australian school and stands alongside other major philanthropic endowments like those of Mr Terry Snow, whose gifts have greatly enhanced Canberra Grammar School’s facilities and scholarship programmes.

“We extend our sincerest gratitude to the late Mr and Mrs Daryl and Hermina Blaxland for their exceptional legacy and extraordinary generosity, which will have a lasting impact on the lives of future generations at Canberra Grammar School.”

Dr Justin Garrick, Head of School
